  • I use Firefox as a web browser, with Safari as a back-up. I viewed my new website from a computer utilizing Internet Explorer, and there are some annoying differences. I talked to the DH (a programmer) about it, and he explained that there were websites and forums devoted to coming up with hacks for IE recognition of CSS. But I don’t want to have to implement hacks just to get my website to look correct in IE! I don’t even use IE. No one should use IE. Everyone should download Mozilla Firefox - it’s free. Or Opera, which is good for CSS. Or Netscape (my 2nd back up browser). Or Safari, of course, which comes with Macs.

I asked the DH why the big corporate websites, like imdB, car manufacturers, and movie studios weren’t putting pressure on Microsoft to have their IE follow the CSS standard more closely. His opinion was that the people who develop and support those big-time sites get paid to solve these kinds of problems. So they may complain about it, but finding ways to work around problems with Micro$oft software is a significant part of their income stream.

I checked my stats for the last year and 41% of the people who visited my site were on IE. Another 40% were using Mozilla (bless you, people!). Another 10% were Safari and the rest were Netscape, Opera and KDE.

So I think I need to figure out a few hacks. Except that IE 7 is coming out very soon (everyone who upgrades to MS’s new operating system) will automatically get IE 7, and the hacks I bother learning to get around the current version of IE might not even work on the IE 7.

    M$ $uck$.

Some of the workarounds for IE are not all that difficult to implement, once you see how IE misunderstands the standards. (The padding and margin settings were the biggest thing I had to find IE workarounds for, but I think I succeeded.) There are other IE problems that are pretty tricky to deal with, and I tried to avoid as many as I could.

I really like the book “Bulletproof Web Design” for most of these issues.

Why have standards and Microsoft ignores them, and we are supposed to fix our blogs so Internet Explorer won’t distort the form and style of our blog.
