  • Seahorses from Tennessee Aquarium, courtesy of WikipediaNever having been much of an animal lover, I always threw my hands up at the question, “What’s your favorite animal?” Generally, I’d answer “cat” just because … well, I don’t know, exactly. I think my family had one once. In any case, people who went on and on about their favorite animals just bewildered the heck out of me. Frogs, horses, cougars, wolves, bears, cows (this one always disturbed me). All very interesting in their own ways (except cows), but what do they have to do with us? Absolutely the worst thing is that icebreaker exercise where you have to pretend to be your “totem animal” and emulate its behavior. What the heck!? Even as a child, watching other kids crawl around on the floor and make weird noises just annoyed me.

As you know, the title of the blog is “Never Say Never …” so of course now, at the ripe old age of 30+ I suddenly - for no apparent reason - like an animal. Increasingly, I’ve been intrigued by marine life. I think it’s the fact that they live in water and therefore have to develop such different mechanisms (compared to land mammals) for eating, birthing, etc. Very, very fascinating.

And my new (only) favorite animal is the seahorse. Don’t ask me why. They are beautiful, and mate for life, and the males give birth, and they really do look like tiny horses! Or dragons (although we must remember that dragons aren’t actually real).

Maybe now that I have a favorite animal, I’ll end up with seahorse everythings. I’ve seen that happen to people. Once the word gets out that so-and-so loves ducks, she ends up with duck pillowcases, duck candles, duck soaps, duck aprons, duck purses, duck sneakers, duck jewelry. I’m guilty of being that type of gift giver (one of my best friends loves dragonflies, and I’ve given her no less than three dragonfly things over the years).

Well, I’m okay with seahorse fangear, but I’m not going to “interpret” a seahorse in a group setting (or alone, for that matter). Just because I don’t know why I like them, doesn’t mean I’ve lost my mind! Seahorses are awesome. They are also rather endangered. So please, don’t buy anything with seahorse powder in it!

I’ve always liked elephants. They seem like such thoughtful creatures.

An interesting related topic is bioluminescence in marine life.

      I’ll act like a chimp if you’ll act like a seahorse! ;-)

I love the cats. Big cats just get me, I can watch them forever. Lions are the sexiest most magnificent creatures on the Earth.

I have often stared at seahorses while in aquariums and marveled at them. But I warn you: don’t let this get out too much or you will indeed wind up with seahorse baubles up the wazoo. For your birthday: Seahorse necklace! For the holidays: Seahorse soap and guest towels! Seriously.
