Today’s Black Pride Moment
Filed Under being creative, from the heart, lil things, local, small happinesses
What’s the most awesome thing about being Black? I could totally wear this hat.

Now, maybe I won’t get hired for a job while wearing it. But I’d probably get a lot of compliments at the health food store from envious not-Black Portlanders. It’s not so much the aesthetic (and I’m more of a caftan girl myself), it’s about having the guts.

That is, truly, an AWESOME hat.
And no, I couldn’t possibly get away with it. ::grin::
That is a cool hat and no, I couldn’t wear it and get away with it. But the world would be a bit less interesting if everyone could wear a hat like that.
“get a lot of compliments …from envious not-Black Portlanders. It’s not so much the aesthetic …it’s about having the guts.”
I never understood why we whites gave up hats (though one hears murmurs about flat hair). On my 40th BD, I decided I was old enough to stop hiding and wear hats. I soon moved to Chicago where even my wildest hats seemed unremarkable - given the exquisitely dressed Black women who dominated the sartorial scene. Now I live in Wisconsin where racism is strong, clothing is boring and even my hats get notice - albeit without any negative racial fall out.
But I couldn’t wear that one, though it is gorgeous. Glad there are Black women who can.
I totally opened this post from my google feed thinking it would be some long entry about some awesome experience or encounter you had. But an encounter with an awesome hat is totally worthy, this just made me smile.

Hat Wearer - You go, girl!
That hat is so YOU! I just bought a kickass kangol in NYC. Everywhere I went, New Yorkers were saying,”Nice hat.” I come back to Ole Virginny and everyone is all, “Is that white girl in a hat? What the…” It’s wrong, h.s.. Plain wrong.
Back to you - shouldn’t they just give you that hat?
(from H Sofia: you are killing me over here. I was feeling all droopy and not-hungry/famished, and you just changed my whole mood!)
