Alex, I’ll Take “Picking Lettuce” for $50/hr
Filed Under politics
“Why do Latinos hate Black people? - this is the unspoken question posed by pundits who remark on Clinton’s sway over Latino voters. I liked this reasonable editorial from LA Times writer Gregory Rodriguez - and I’ve decided that the whole thing is ridiculous. The irony is that the LH and I were both sitting here trying to answer that faux question until it dawned on us that we are two Latinos voting for Obama! Wow, that media is tricky! (Unless something truly wild happens to cause Ron Paul to win the Repub. nomination, in which case, only one Latino in this house - me - is surely voting for Obama).
And I’ve decided that if it comes down to Clinton and McCain, I won’t throw a tantrum and vote for McCain. I will vote for Hillary. She is not insane. Being calculating and wanting the Presidency does not make her an evil bitch. I don’t want to reward her for the shenanigans towards Obama, but at the same time, I did some more research on McCain, and he really is too conservative and beloved by big business (for good reason). Also, I don’t know whether it’s singing songs about bombing more countries, or being so out of touch with the working class that he thinks Americans wouldn’t pick lettuce for $50 an hour, but his temper and choice of words suggest he’s missing a few screws.

Just a few?
And white people don’t support Obama either. At least working class white people. My husband and I are a pair of working class white people who paln to vote for Obama in the primary. I know other working class white people who have similar plans.
I read the article linked in your blog. My MIL stated the Latinos don’t like blacks (her terminology) as fact, while we were waiting in a restaurant. She said it in that sotto tone of voice white people use when discussing other races in public places.
As for McCain’s loose screws, I suspect his experience in Vietnam had something to do with it. As for Ann Coulter’s loose screws, I have no explanation.
Jacqueline - well, the rest are loose.
Toonhead - It’s not my style to despise people, but Coulter makes my blood boil. I’ve come to the tentative conclusion that she is a monster of her own creation, hemmed in on all sides by her fame and fortune into perpetuating tired half truths, hatred, and lies. The last time I saw her on tv, I got this disturbing sense that she was a hollow entity giving voice to a pre-recorded “message” that she herself didn’t comprehend. I feel badly for her. I don’t think she’s made the world a better place by being in it - and that’s the least any one of us little human beings can hope for.
Just received an e-mail from the state director for Obama’s campaign about becoming a Precinct captain for Obama. The director’s name: Adam Saenz. 3 known latinos for Obama - alert the media!
Sorry about the many replies. As for Ann Coulter, does providing masturbation material (I treat her writings as a form of porn) count as making the world a better place?
Clinton’s campaign treats the Latino community as some sort of monolithic, homogeneous mass which isn’t true for any group. You can’t say all white males think _________ all white women think _________ all African-Americans think ________________.
What is true is that Obama has the lead because he has shored up the African-American vote, regardless of gender, he has a lead among White Men, he is competitive with her with White women, and he draws young people in drove into his coalition.
If Hillary wins, I will vote for her over McCain in a heartbeat. He is a true war hero, but I worry about the psychological effects of someone who has undergone years of torture. I think that would make a person feel extremely vindictive and quick to strike against any enemy militarily.
I wasn’t sure how bomb-crazy McCain really was (after all, he does acknowlege some international laws), until he took on Bill Kristol as an advisor. HE, I KNOW is bomb crazy. So yeah, the vote that would have been his via a vote for Nader over Clinton is no longer.
Also, I’ve come to think that if/when it comes down to the “smoke-filled” room decision, it will depend on the party’s paranoia about having an electable candidate vs. the power of the Clinton networking machine. So even in the non-democratic method of nomination, things are still balanced.
Toonhood - Hmm; I’m going to have to say no to the latest Coulter question. Her pornish-iousness is offset by the fact that her popularity has convinced several thousand potentially good parents not to have children.
