On a parenting board I visit, someone mentioned receiving a DVD called Obsession with their Sunday paper. She watched it and said it was all about how radical Islam wants to destroy the West. Has anyone heard of this? Seen it? What’s the deal? Is it some kind of advertising or was it supposed to be “news?” I’ve never heard of a DVD arriving with the Sunday paper!

Wow. That’s awful.
You made me curious so I googled it.
Here’s some more information.
Oh, and props to the newspaper in Greensboro, NC which turned down the advertising money and refused to distribute it.
CC
Thanks for looking into that CC. I got an email from someone else saying that it was distributed in the “Akron Beacon, Altoona Mirror, Ann Arbor News, Blade, Bucks Co. Courier Times, Centennial Citizen, Chronicle of Higher Education, Cincinnati Enquirer, Claremont Review, Clovis News Journal, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, World Jewish Digest, Daily Camera,” - and the list goes on.
I also found the Wikipedia page for the Clarion Fund, which is responsible for making the video, but there is very little information on them, and the source of their funding is “unclear.”
*sigh* This stuff makes my head hurt.
I received the DVD with my Sunday paper. I haven’t watched it. Do you want me to send it to you?
Ooh, sure, that would be great, Mel! Thanks.
Sure. I just put a reminder in my calendar to look for it to mail it to you.
Enjoy

Well, this article provides a little more background information on this DVD - they were distributed in “swing” states. And Clarion’s spokesperson said that 28 million copies of it will be distributed this month (September 2008). That’s one for every ten Americans! (Thanks, John, for the link.)
They didn’t put it in my local paper (a tiny paper in a very red state), but they did put it in my parents’ paper. And my parents were “thoughtful” enough to mail it to me.
Allow me to be thoughtful enough to provide this link to the U*UTube video of Rev. Peter Morales’ “stump speech” in which he describes Judaism, Christianity and Islam as “obsolete religions, created for another time” that “contribute to the darkness” of prejudice, hatred, injustice and ignorance etc.

Who knows? Maybe the UUA will incorporate his blanket condemnation of these and other “obsolete religions” into the next UUA marketing campaign DVD. . .

Intolerance is scary.
On a possibly related note, there was a noxious gassing terrorist attack in a Dayton Ohio mosque.
The atheist blogger and biology professor PZ Myers is speculating that there is a connection between the DVD in the local paper and this mosque attack:
Terror attack on US soil

His blog has links to other politics blogs and the original news reports from the Dayton Ohio newspapers.
Myers is calling this a terorist attack — based on my search of Google News this morning is that very people outside a few liberal bloggers are calling the gassing of children a terrorist attack.
