  • An announcement: I gave birth to a little girl, Inara Sandrine, at 12:01am on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. She was 9 lbs 3 oz, and 20 inches long - at 41 weeks and 1 day.

Hubby and I are spending most of our time at the neonatal intensive care unit with her, as she awaits surgery for coarctation of the aorta - after birth, the original diagnosis of the more serious HLHS was withdrawn. We are very happy for this, though of course anxious about the upcoming surgery.

I’m writing from my iphone so keeping this brief. Thanks for all the thoughts, advice, encouragement, resources, and prayers. We appreciated everything!

Here is a photo of our little sweetie pie. Her names mean “a ray of light sent from heaven” and “defender of humanity.”

When you factor in deaths and resignations, 19% of US Vice Presidents have had to replace the President of the United States. So when I watched the VP debate last night, I was trying to consider which one I’d feel more comfortable with having a 1 in 5 chance of becoming Commander in Chief over the next four to eight years. It was definitely Biden.

And I cannot even begin to express my disappointment at how Palin’s debating skills have been perceived. I don’t have a high school diploma, and can hardly be called an intellectual. But the fact that mediocrity is not only being accepted here, but praised, just blows my mind. The pundits generally agree that she did well enough to satisfy the public. I understand that using medium-to-large words - even when they convey information - is the sign of an insider or elitist. What I didn’t realize is that the new definition of “straight shooter” is to use small words that convey no information whatsoever.

Maybe it’s the hormones, but I find this distressing. The bar has been set so terribly, terribly low. Before I point fingers at others, I do try to look at myself - How am I contributing to society? How am I raising the bar in my own life and the communities of which I’m a part? It would be nice if the media, or even the politicians, would pose such questions to the public. Remind us … admonish us, even.
