3:10 to Yuma (2007)
7/10
So far as Westerns go, this is a good one - entertaining with enough classical archetypes to hang your hat on. Crowe's Ben Wade is an unrepentant killer with a code, while Bale's down-on-his luck farmer struggles to be honest in a town that respects aggression. The trouble with archetypes is that they can be awfully familiar, but the relationship between Bale's character and his son is well-done, as are all of the performances.

Death at a Funeral (2007)
7/10
The director of What About Bob?, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a personal favorite), and In & Out offers us this airy little movie about a British funeral that is anything but staid and respectable. This one had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions, but bear in mind that the humor is more slapstick than brainy.

Doomsday (2008)
7/10
We need so many more movies about bad-ass women; I really liked The Descent, and this one was even more entertaining - all kinds of action: medieval, industrial punk, military, hand to hand. Eden is never over-sexualized; she is hot because she is strong. This movie is pretty over the top, but no more so than any other high octane action flick.

Fido
7/10
A genuinely new perspective in zombie movies - set in 1950s middle class USA, these zombies are for sale - as servants. An interesting, amusing, and well-made look at issues of class and propaganda machines.

I Am Legend (2007)
7/10
A sobering story thick with tension. Well-directed, and much quieter than the usual blockbuster. Pacing drags a bit in the last third.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
6/10
njoyable little film; Ciaran Hinds is so fabulous here. Why is he so wonderful? Not so sure about McDormand's accent, but I was rooting for her. Amy Adams has the flibbity jibbit act down pat; this was cute. Not as great as 8 Women or Bon Voyage, which - if you liked this - you'd probably like more.

Stardust
8/10
This movie surprised me; I didn't expect to like it much, and didn't realize it was a Gaiman film. Found it very entertaining (first 20 mins kind of cheesy). DeNiro is great, as is Pfeiffer. Kind of old school swashbuckler. Cox is good as the dorky hero! A lot of humor in this. Also, this is a good movie for young adolescents.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet...
9/10
Gory (I closed my eyes) but highly entertaining story of an unstable man bent on revenge, above all else. This movie features great humor, a wonderful performance from Helena Bonham Carter (the rest of the cast is good, too), and clever, catchy songs.

Maybe it's because we're humanists (one secular, one spiritual), but we enjoyed this movie about a young brother and sister being influenced by technology-wrapped messages from a future, dying world. The children characters are realistically written and well acted. Not a brilliant movie, but worth a rental.
